Stair Refinishing · South Shore MA

Stair Refinishing & Installation

Treads, risers, stringers, balusters, and railings — refinished or replaced to perfectly match your main hardwood floor. The most impactful detail in any South Shore home.

The Staircase Is the First Thing People See.

In nearly every Weymouth colonial, Hingham cape, and Quincy three-decker, the staircase is the visual centerpiece of the home. When it's worn, mismatched, or carpeted over old oak treads, it pulls down the rest of the renovation.

Stair refinishing is detail work — every tread, riser, and baluster is hand-sanded, stained, and finished individually. This isn't drum-sander work. It's craftsman work, and it's where Peter's 20+ years of experience really shows.

Our Stairs process

  1. Inspection & Estimate: Peter measures every tread and riser, inspects the stringers, and gives you a fixed-price quote.
  2. Strip & Repair: Carpet, staples, paint, or old finish removed. Damaged treads or noses repaired.
  3. Hand Sanding: Every tread, riser, and baluster sanded individually with detail sanders and hand-scrapers.
  4. Stain to Match: Stain test samples done on your actual stair before committing to color.
  5. 3 Coats of Finish: High-traffic finish — typically Bona Traffic HD or oil-modified poly — applied between traffic patterns.

Frequently asked questions

Can you refinish stairs to match my hardwood floor?

Yes — and this is the #1 reason Weymouth, Quincy, and Hingham homeowners hire us. We typically do floors and stairs in the same project so the stain matches perfectly.

Can the staircase be used while you're refinishing it?

We typically refinish one half of the staircase at a time so you can still safely use the stairs. The job takes 1–2 days longer this way but it keeps your home livable.

What about painted risers and stained treads?

A very popular look in Hingham and Milton modern homes. We stain treads to match the floor and paint risers white for contrast.

Can you replace old carpeted stairs with hardwood?

Yes — we strip the carpet, repair the stringers, and install new solid oak (or matching) treads and risers. Usually 2–4 day project.
